4 Common Eye Problems During Monsoons | Sure Vision

As the lovely scent of petrichor hangs in the air, the monsoon season brings on a wave of happiness to us all. However, there are some drawbacks to this season. The rains bring with it a myriad of illnesses and diseases, including eye problems. Eyes are a very fragile organ that needs to be taken care of. It is never a good idea to ignore symptoms such as redness, swelling or burning sensation in the eyes. If you have any of these symptoms, consult an ophthalmologist immediately as it could be conjunctivitis, corneal ulcer or stye - all of which are quite common during the rainy season.

People enjoy getting wet in the rain but they are not aware that direct contact between the eyes and rain water can cause so many kinds of infections.

4 Eye Problems That Occur During Monsoon Season

1.     Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is one of the most common eye problems that occurs during the monsoon season. It is infectious and spreads when one comes in contact with a conjunctivitis afflicted person. It occurs due to viruses, bacteria or chlamydia, but it can also be caused as a result of using expired eye cosmetics, contact lens cleaning solutions, bleach in swimming pools, etc.

It generally spreads through touch (direct or indirect). Make sure you avoid sharing towels, napkins, handkerchiefs, pillow covers, etc., with the patient. And, if you have pink eyes, there is no reason to panic. Look for a proper treatment by an eye specialist and maintain good personal hygiene like frequently washing your hands.

2.     Stye

A stye is a bacterial infection. It involves one or more of the small glands near the base of your eyelashes. It looks like a lump on the eyelid. During monsoon, it is very common to get eye styes due to the bacterial infections. The glands become  clogged as a result of the bacterias multiplying in that small space without having any place to go. Due to the monsoons, the dust particles and other substances in the eye can get caught in these glands which make it a perfect place for the bacterias to flourish. The basic symptoms of stye are pus discharge, redness over eyelids, unbearable pain and eye bumps.

3.     Corneal Ulcer

A corneal ulcer is a wound that occurs on the surface of the cornea which is the transparent structure overlying the front surface of your eye. The most common cause of corneal ulcers is an infection with bacteria, viruses, fungi, or a parasite. The moisture content in the air particularly during the rainy season creates a favourable condition for the viruses to grow and multiply. Its symptoms include a painful, red eye, with mild to severe eye discharge and reduced vision. It is very important that it is treated in time in order to avoid complications.

4.     Dry Eyes

Tears are made up of fatty oils, water proteins and electrolytes. The surface of the eyes are typically nourished, protected and lubricated through tears. When you have dry eyes, the eyes become unable to provide adequate moisture either due to poor quality or insufficient tears. Dry eyes are caused by an exposure to dust and pollutants that increase due to the monsoons. Hence it is very important to wear protective eye gear if you are travelling. An eye specialist will prescribe you some eye drops that can lubricate your eyes and keep them safe.
